“I did not want to get involved with a rock star. No way. It is not a sane thing to do.”
Let’s face it. Supermodels dating super rock stars is basically the Hollywood textbook standard.
In fact, it’s a cliche so ingrained in our minds, that it’s not uncommon for people to start making bets about how many years until adultery or divorce as soon as the wedding bells ring.
Somali-American supermodel Iman Abdulmajid was all too aware of that, so she swore against dating rock stars.
As stated by Bowie himself, “I’m an instant star. Just add water and stir.”
Butttt thenshe actually met David…
“I did not want to get involved with a rock star,” she admitted in 2011. “No way. It is not a sane thing to do, but David changed my mind. He wooed me.”
In 2000, Bowie told Hello Magazine, “My attraction to her was immediate and all-encompassing. I couldn’t sleep for the excitement of our first date…That she would be my wife, in my head, was a done deal. I’d never gone after anything in my life with such passion in all my life. I just knew she was the one.”
Even after she broke her no-rock-star rule, and walked down the aisle with himin 1992, Imanwas wise in how she approached her marriage to an iconic celebrity. She once told Naomi Campbell,“I am married to David Jones. David Bowie and David Jones are two totally different people.”
Bowie’s real name was David Robert Jones, and that’s how she decided to mark his identity as a man.
From romantic river rides in Paris to bending over to tie hershoes, David Bowie wasa class act of a charmerbut according to Iman, there’s a bigger secret to why their marriage lasted from vows til ‘death do us part.’
When asked about the secret totheir 23-year marriage, Iman said, “First, I think you’ve got to feel hot for each other and respect each other. That’s where it starts. Also, we are very private, so we decided from early on that we will keep the press and editors and everybody out of our house.”
They made sure to guard their love life like the most sacred of treasures by keeping it private and kicking the paparazzi to the curb when they came too close. They would maintain appearances on social media in support of one another and get flashy photos along with the rest of the A-listers when out in public, butwhen it got too close to home, they put their foot down.
In 2000, Iman gave birth to Alexandria Zahra Jones, and the couple also wanted to make sure their daughterfelt protected and safe from the outside world in her own home. After all, it’s a right we all should have.
According to an article by CNN, the couple would not even allow photo spreads of their fancy houses.
That certainly explains why Bowie’s 18-month battle with liver cancer remained largely secret until after his death was announced.
And when it was, Iman made sure to celebratehis life with the rest of the world. Consistent with herprivacy patterns, she hasn’t said a whole lot, but the words she has shared have been mighty powerful.
The day before her husband’sdeath, the 60-year-old supermodelshared these captivatingwords on Twitter:
She marked it with the single-word caption, “Rise.”
And just hours before Bowie passed, she shared this message:
It read, “The struggle is real, but so is God.”It seems quite fitting that Iman’s name in Arabic means “faith.”
While it’stragic to mourn the loss of such an adored cultural iconand even more so for those closest to him, it’s also beautiful to see howloss can bring people to their knees and draw them closer to God.
May her faith carry her through her grief, andmay the epic love she shared with her belovedDavid Jones forever shine through the darkness of his death.
